I came across Olloclip quite randomly on Wednesday, not sure how, probably looking at a photo someone had posted online I guess. Anyway I liked what I saw and thought I would have a punt and buy one, I take loads of pictures with my iPhone so it would be a nice addition to have in my pocket or work bag.

First thing I have to say is the delivery was super fast. I placed my order mid afternoon on Wednesday and it turned up before 0800 this morning (Friday). I paid a little extra for express delivery which was saying it would arrive between 29 November & 2 December and I thought the standard delivery could easily not arrive until New Year.

What is an ‘Olloclip’?

Olloclip is a funky little clip-on lens set for your iPhone4 & 4s.

There is a lens on either side of the clip so you just take the clip off, flip it around and clip it back on to change lens, nice and simple, no moving parts no reliance on any clever technology other than good old friction.

So what do you get?

For a shade under £45 you get 3 lenses, Fisheye, Macro & Wide Angle. The lenses are built in to the clip, with the fisheye screwed over the macro lens, both lenses have caps to keep them from getting scratched and it all comes in a little bag come cleaning cloth.

The build quality is very good, the clip is solid, just tight enough to grip on to the corner of your phone and keep it in place but without struggling to clip it on. I have a screen protector on the front of my phone so that may make a difference to the fit, but as far as I am concerned it is just right. The lens caps also fit well, you know they are unlikely to come off while it is floating around in your bag, even if it isn’t in its little bag.

So what do the lenses do?

I’ve only had the lens in my hand for just over an hour so here are some test shots taken at my desk.

Fish Eye

Macro

Wide Angle

Standard iPhone lens from same distance

The lenses obviously work with any of the camera apps you may have on your phone.

I often look at the add on lenses you can get for you phone, but always think they are a bit of a waste of money and have doubts about the quality. I took a chance on the Olloclip and so far I think it is excellent, the cost is well worth it when you feel the quality of the build, it feels nice and solid, not like it will get broken easily or become loose over time.

Having had it in my hands for just an hour or so I can’t see much wrong with it at all, I can’t wait to get out and play with it some more in the wild. The only down side is I have to remove my iPhone cover to use it, it is only a very minor thing, I like to have my phone in a cover to keep it scratch free and protect it that little bit when I inevitably drop it. This is nothing to do with Olloclip and not a big deal at all.

My only regret? I wish I had brought the red one rather than the black one, it is so funky and cool I want it to stand out more!
